Building Construction

Building construction is one of the most popular types of construction projects and the one that most people are familiar with one. These projects are usually smaller than other types of building projects, and popular definition of building construction is the process of adding structure to real property. For instance, building a house on a piece of land already owned by the person who will own the house is an example of a building construction project.

But building construction can include other projects than just constructing entire buildings. In fact, most building construction projects are small renovations. Renovating and updating bathrooms are common renovations, as are room additions. Industrial Construction

The smallest sector of the construction industry and what people are usually most unfamiliar with is industrial construction. Industrial construction projects include for-profit projects that are owned by very large corporations. These projects are some of the largest in scope and include such industries as medicine, petroleum, chemical, manufacturing, power generation, and so on. Industrial construction projects also have to adhere very closely to government laws and regulations and have to undergo an extensive inspection process, which means a great deal goes into the planning and preparation stages of these projects.

Of course, this is only a brief overview of the different types of construction projects. The construction industry is large, and it’s easy to see why. Preliminary reports indicate that the child was thrown from the vehicle while his father backed up and was subsequently struck on the head by the large bucket full of dirt. In another accident involving a skid steer, a man fell seven stories inside one of the vehicles while participating in demolition work in Chicago.

These small and agile machines are most assuredly not the only vehicles involved in serious construction accidents. While not as common on smaller construction sites, cranes still play a significant role in assisting workers on the job with lifting heavy pieces of building material such as floor joists and beam supports. However, crane accidents also make up a large portion of construction accident statistics.

In a recent case in New York, a man was killed when the boom arm of a crane snapped off and crushed the operator as he was working on a bridge. Reports indicate that there is no clear reason at the moment as to what caused the boom to snap. Regardless, crane accidents could have any number of malfunctions. In international news, reports of a crane collapse which killed seven men as they worked on a rail line in India were released a few weeks ago.

The tragic reality, however, is that safety is often not the primary concern of the workers or those in charge. Time constraints, deadlines, and a casual attitude often are contributing factors to preventable construction accidents. Three New York Construction Workers Settle Injury Claims For $3.85 Million

Three undocumented workers have reached settlements in New York after being the victims of a construction accident. The three men suffered serious injuries due to extremely poor working conditions. One of the men, a plumber, was scalded when a pipe burst while he was working at a Wall Street construction site. Another of the men sustained debilitating injuries to his foot after a steel beam crushed parts of his lower body while on a construction site in downtown Manhattan. The final man was injured when three large metal trusses collapsed on him, fracturing his hip and causing several other serious injuries.

According the attorney for the three men, Brian O’Dwyer, “all three cases involve construction and terribly unsafe working conditions.” And indeed, this case is no exception to the experience of many undocumented workers; a large majority of undocumented workers are often forced to work in unsafe situations or risk losing their job. This alarming trend seems to be growing across the United States as construction jobs become harder to find amid the nationwide economic crisis. Of course, unsafe working conditions will invariably lead to more construction accidents, a sad and frightening fact for many of those involved in the construction field.

Executive director Joel Magallan of Asociacion Tepeyac, an immigrant advocacy group, said that while construction work is often dangerous, undocumented workers are likely to work at sites that lack proper safety equipment, OSHA regulation compliance, and required warning signs. According to several studies, both by local nonprofit agencies as well as national researchers, abuses of workers on construction sites are widespread. An especially high number of immigrant workers were represented among those whom had suffered either seriously debilitating or fatal injuries due to unsafe working conditions.
